> 2012 Mazda3 5-door Features: performance

Engine

The Mazda3 5-door now offers a choice of two engines for the first time.

Mazda3 i models feature the new SKYACTIV®-G 2.0L engine, which provides greater power and better fuel economy than the Mazda3's previous 2.0L MZR engine.

  • The all-new SKYACTIV®-G 2.0L engine generates 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque*.
  • The SKYACTIV®-G introduces Mazda's new high-compression engine technology and other friction-saving improvements.
  • When mated to the generation of SKYACTIV® transmissions, the new SKYACTIV®-G gets up to 39 mpg highway†, making it the most fuel efficient Mazda3 5-door.

For a little more get-up-and-go, the available 2.5-liter engine delivers reliable power and more than a few smiles.

  • 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder with variable valve timing (VVT) produces a strong 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque*
  • Earns up to 29 mpg highway†.
  • The 2.5L engine hails from the same MZR engine family proven in motorsports.

* Power figures are lower in California emission states including CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NM, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT and WA.
† Mazda3 i models with 2,0L SKYACTIV®-G engine and SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission 28 city/39 highway mpg. Mazda3 s models with 2.5L engine and 5-speed automatic transmission 22 city/29 highway mpg. Actual results may vary.

Transmissions

Mazda3 i models offer two new SKYACTIV® transmissions that work with the SKYACTIV®-G engine to provide enhanced fuel economy over previous models.

  • SKYACTIV®-MT is a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission.
  • Available SKYACTIV®-Drive 6-speed Sport automatic transmission with manual-shift mode.

The 2.5-liter engine offers a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed Sport automatic transmission with manual-shift mode, delivering crisp, responsive shifting and control at all speeds.

  • Smooth-shifting 6-speed manual transmission.
  • Available 5-speed Sport automatic transmission with manual-shift mode.
  • Manual-shift mode allows you to select the gears yourself should you crave a little more fun and control.

Fuel Economy

The economical Mazda3 helps you pass on the pump more often.

Both Mazda3 5-Door 4-cylinder engines are available in a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) version in select states†.

* EPA-estimated mileage. Actual results may vary.
† Power figures are lower in California emission states including CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NM, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT and WA. Horsepower figures vary. Please see Features & Specs for more details.

Suspension/Handling

Mazda3's advanced suspension system strikes the perfect balance between superior handling and ride comfort, while precision steering keeps the driving fun no matter what the journey brings.
  • Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering (EHPAS) preserves feedback and confidence at high speeds and delivers superior maneuverability at low speeds.
  • Independent MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension.
  • Front and rear stabilizer bars help keep the vehicle level with the road when the drive gets more exciting.
  • Standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)* modulates the throttle and brakes when over- or understeer is detected, helping keep the vehicle stable during aggressive maneuvers.
  • Standard Traction Control System (TCS) detects any loss of traction and then adjusts the throttle to provide the drive wheels with a better grip on the road for more sure-footed acceleration in difficult driving conditions.
  • Standard Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) pulses the brakes hundreds of times per second to help prevent wheel lockup so the driver can make controlled and confident stops.

* Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is an electronic system to help the driver maintain control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input can all affect whether DSC will be effective in preventing loss of control. Please see your Owner's Manual for further details.
