> 2011 mazda rx-8 Features: performance

RENESIS Rotary Engine

With no pistons or valves to slow things down, the RENESIS rotary engine rivals conventional engines in terms of smoothness and quick response.

  • The 6-side intake ports with 3-stage variable induction system (VIS) and a variable fresh air duct mean this engine is designed to perform.
  • Powerful 232-hp engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 9000 rpm redline or a 212-hp engine with a 6-speed Sport automatic transmission and a 7500 rpm redline.
  • Its smaller size, lighter weight and front mid-ship placement enable near-perfect weight distribution and superior handling.

Performance Transmission

Take charge. Either 6-speed transmission will deliver an exhilarating, connected-to-the-road feeling like no other.
  • A close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission delivers precise gear selection thanks to its direct-linkage and short-throw shifter.
  • The 6-speed Sport automatic transmission includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a Formula One-style driving experience that’s every bit as fun as it sounds.
  • Manual transmission models get a lighter carbon fiber driveshaft that helps reduce overall weight.

Limited-Slip Differential

  • Torque-sensing conical limited-slip differential, standard with manual transmission, gives the power delivery you need to hammer the hairpins and launch out of curves.
  • Directs power to the wheel with a better grip for smooth, predictable power delivery.

Agile Suspension

Nimble would be an understatement. The lightweight RX-8 is an apex-hungry, corner handling delight.

  • Double-wishbone front suspension with forged aluminum control arms are lighter and stronger for a reduced unsprung weight that translates into improved handling.
  • Multilink rear suspension with tubular control arms and lightweight aluminum-alloy hubs are ready to handle just about any road you’d care to conquer.
  • Step up to the R3 for firmer Bilstein® shock absorbers and a urethane-foam-injected front suspension cross member that takes the R3’s handling up another level.

Weight Distribution

We took full advantage of the lightweight rotary engine to give the RX-8 nearly perfect balance for an incredibly agile ride.

  • Light and compact, the RENESIS rotary engine is mounted low in the chassis behind the centerline of the front axle for near 50/50 weight distribution.
  • Center-balanced weight gives the RX-8 neutral handling, making it ideally responsive to both the driver and the road.

Miles Per Gallon

Mazda engineers have designed the high-performance RX-8 to make the most of its fuel. Who says you can’t serve two masters?
